Storytelling

A deep reverence for story runs through all facets of Theatre of the Ancients’ work. Joanna Hruby has studied storytelling with renowned British mythologist Martin Shaw of the School of Myth, and has been devoted to the craft of storytelling for over a decade.

Joanna has developed various storytelling performances with a strong visual component, taking inspiration from ancient street theatre traditions such as ‘cantastoria‘ (storytelling scroll performance) and ‘kamishibai‘ (a Japanese tradition featuring illustrated panels). She also enjoys suspending an audience with words alone, and specialises in the traditional folk tales (or ‘rondalles‘) of Ibiza and Formentera, collected by the folklorist Joan Castelló Guasch.
