A children’s ‘kamishibai’ storytelling performance dedicated to the ancient culture and folklore surrounding the freshwaters of Ibiza.

The Lady of the River is a storytelling performance told through the format of ‘kamishibai’, a Japanese tradition based on the use of illustrated panels. The story follows Joana, a young Ibizan girl who wishes to understand why her local river, the Riu de Santa Eulària, has no water in it. Following the instructions of her grandmother, Joana conjures an old spell to summon one of the river’s water spirits, who takes her on a journey through time to understand the secret story of Ibiza’s freshwaters, the plethora of local history, folklore and culture associated with them, and the urgent message they have for modern-day Ibiza.
This storytelling piece, performed in English, features around 20 large, exquisitely illustrated panels, created in collaboration with the artist Michaela Meadow.
