The Myths of Sant Joan

A visual storytelling performance exploring the local legends, superstitions and folklore surrounding Spain’s midsummer solstice festival, the ‘Noche de San Juan‘ (St John’s night).

The Myths of Sant Joan is a piece developed and performed with the multi-disciplinary artist Liz Kueneke in 2022. Using cut-outs, paper theatre elements and arcane animation techniques, the performance brings to life the many myths and legends associated with St John’s night, Spain’s equivalent of the night of the summer solstice. The piece explores the pagan lore at the heart of this important annual festival – including the significance of fire, and the lesser known but crucially important theme of water – and ventures through Spain and into the heart of Eivissa and the Balearic Islands to reveal the rituals and supersticious practices which take place even today, to keep the spirit of the Noche de San Juan burning brightly throughout the ages.

Performed bilingually in English / Spanish. The piece has been performed on St John’s night within the multi-disciplinary arts event Holotropia at Las Dalias, San Carlos, Ibiza (2022), at the restaurant Bistro Mundo, San Joan, Ibiza (2023) and at Can Cristófol organic farm, San Carlos, Ibiza (2024).
