Friki Funghi

A community theatre project for children and their parents, co-facilitated with actress and director Olivia Gajetzki, culminating in a performance at Can Cristófol organic farm, in December 2024.

‘Friki Funghi‘ was the second consecutive Community Christmas Performance to take place at Can Cristófol organic farm, in San Carlos, Ibiza, facilitated with actress and theatre director Olivia Gajetzki. Over the course of five weeks, Olivia and I worked with a group of 11 children aged 6-13 and two of their parents, to create a Christmas theatre performance for the Can Cristófol community, reviving an old tradition at the farm which faded out with the onset of tourism and the general decline of agriculture on Ibiza in the 1960’s and 70’s.

Friki Funghi was a surrealist fairytale and fable celebrating the world of mushrooms and the mycelial network, and calling out for community and solidarity in rootless times. Children and parents worked with Olivia Gajetzki and I in weekly drama, arts and crafts workshops in order to develop the performance, which was shared with around 70 audience members at Can Cristófol organic farm.

The play was performed in Spanish, English and also some Eivissenc (Ibiza’s local Catalan dialect), in an attempt to bridge Ibiza’s different linguistic groups through storytelling, in the name of culture, ecology and local heritage.
