“Es Somni de Pan / The Dream of Pan”
A Midsummer Mask-making Odyssey
18th – 21st June, North West Ibiza
The Greek god Pan is associated with the forgotten, wild places and the deep woods… but he also lies at the heart of several myths relating to midsummer. Join us as we evoke the spirit of Pan on the edge of the pine forest in Northern Ibiza, to celebrate the summer solstice. This artistic immersion will be led by Joanna Hruby, puppeteer, performance-maker, storyteller and founder of Theatre of the Ancients.
Together we will dive into Celtic, Greek, North European and local Ibizan mythology to reflect on the midsummer as a meeting place of two opposing forces – light and dark, sun and moon, fire and water – and the enchanted, fertile domain of the god Pan. We will embark on a mask-making process, using recycled, natural and found materials, and on our final evening we will step out of the woods to greet the setting sun, in a performative masked rite to coincide with solstice night.
This four-day odyssey will include… storytelling in the pine forest, a mask-sculpting process including cardboard sculpture and papel maché, time to commune with nature and let the stories inhabit you, and… on our final evening, a collaborative outdoor performance ritual, to celebrate the summer solstice, the night of Sant Joan and the journey we will have completed together as a group.
Schedule:
Thursday 18th, evening:
group welcome, and a storytelling immersion in the pine forest
Friday 19th (full day):
a full morning and afternoon of mask-making,
with time for siesta, rest and swim in between
Saturday 20th (full day):
a full morning and afternoon of mask-making,
with time for siesta, rest and swim in between
Sunday 21st **Midsummer Solstice** (afternoon into evening):
time to finish our creations, a collective performance ritual at sunset,
and a final solstice celebration
Fee (non-residential, includes lunch on Friday and Saturday):
Low budget: 300€

Standard price: 400€
Higher budget: 500€
(if you are able to pay this fee, you will support another individual
on a low budget to join the workshop)
